Is it routine to order an ultrasound early in pregnancy to confirm dates and viability?

I have a different doc with this pregnancy than my first. He ordered an early ultrasound to check dates and viability. There's nothing wrong that I can say that would make him say the pregnancy isn't viable. Is this just routine? I didn't think to ask until after I left is office
