Why is my period so late (not pregnant)?

For the past week, I've been freaking out more and more exponentially because my period was late. Finally, I took a home pregnancy test and according to that, I'm in the clear. But why am I so late? Could it be the test was wrong? I'm used to fluctuations in the cycle, but it hasn't been this off for years. Could it be I did the test too early? This is 7 days after my period was due, first morning urine, two separate tests...
