Why do I have to fast my my ultrasound tomorrow?

I have no issue having to fast, especially since I have an AM appointment. I am just curious as to why I have to fast. It's an abdominal ultrasound (I think the whole thing) to check my gallbladder and liver. Is it the same as a regular ultrasound? (check for baby and such) Just curious! Thank you in advance!
